Mid-summer analytics

Can you believe August is right around the corner? The summer is flying by here at the reserve. No doubt the trail cameras are capturing pictures of interns going for morning runs and commuting to and from their experimental plots, bison wallowing in the dust, coyotes and foxes on patrol and plenty of baby deer. We're hoping that with our newly-instituted trimming regime (where allowed) we'll be seeing more of the fun animal pictures and fewer of the blowing grass pictures in the next season!

You've likely all received this via email as well, but we wanted to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU for all your contributions to date! As of today (July 31th), 4612 of you have contributed 2,698,204 classifications of images from Cedar Creek. You are a diverse batch of citizen scientists. You hail from 40 countries (with Australia, the UK and the Netherlands particularly representing! Hi Jolanda!) and 49 of the 50 US states (where are you, Mississippi volunteers?). You are plant people and animal people, computer engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and students, grandparents and parents and children, office workers, graphic designers, salespeople and outdoors professionals. (You can read about some of our volunteers in past Volunteer Perspective blog posts, and dig deeper into these specific analytic metrics on this blog post.)

What does our global volunteer pool look like?

Where in the USA are classifiers located?

The dedication you bring to this project is apparent, as are your unique backgrounds and perspectives. You’ve left more than 30,000 comments about the things you’ve found in our images! You’ve waded through thousands of pictures of gently waving grass, explored the savanna with our bison herd and investigated grazing exclosures with our deer families, and found all four species in our canid community. You’ve even uncovered hidden gems – butterflies and other arthropods, more than 25 species of birds, adorable flying squirrels, the Cedar Creek time warp, and intriguing animal behavior and relationships we weren’t expecting to find. We can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done!

As we collect the next batch of images here at the reserve, we invite you to join us in a push to finish the current season. Given the complexity of our image retirement rules, it’s always challenging to say exactly how long it will take to finish the currently uploaded images. We are getting there though – with a naïve estimate of 10 unique classifications needed per image, as was the case on our first two seasons, we are more than 65% of the way to completion. If you have the time to contribute a handful of classifications or recruit a friend or co-worker to help, we can get this batch done and move on to season 4. With bear tracks, fox scat and bison rubs visible across the property, our cameras are bound to have caught some interesting new images. We can’t wait to share them with you and see what you find! And if you have friends in Mississippi, please get them to sign up and join the fun :)

Thank you again for all you do – we are learning so much about our wild communities through your classifications! Please keep up the amazing work at eyesonwild.com!

    1. So are we! Just need to get through Season 3. We've learned so much about how to properly structure a season (like don't upload 233,900 images at once ;) ) and are excited to roll out a few tweaks in the next season. Thanks again for all your help throughout!
