New workflow! New season!

New workflow! New season! Get started today!

In response to your feedback and to celebrate one year since our launch, Eyes on the Wild has gone mobile! We invite you to join in on your smartphones to help us quickly weed out the pictures of wild animals from those of grass, cars and people. It's fun and easy, and helps us use your valuable volunteer time more efficiently. It's also a great way to escape from family responsibilities during the holiday season. After all, it's for science! Ready to get started on the new workflow? Instructions are below!

1. Download the Zooniverse app. It's free to download on the Apple App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android! Sign into your Zooniverse account using the same information you use on the computer version.

2. Find the Eyes on the Wild project and click on it (it's under the 'Biology' section). You'll be taken to our new 'Animal or Not?' workflow, which presents you with a simple question: is there a non-human animal in the image presented to you?

3. There will be one to three pictures presented to you. You'll know if there are more than one by looking for the circular buttons on the left of the image, which let you scroll up and down to see all images in that set. You can swipe the pictures up with your finger to see the others in the set.

4. You can zoom in tapping the button with the four directional arrows in the bottom right of the image area (just above the yes option). Then pinch and expand to zoom in on the photo.

5. Once you've looked through the pictures, it's time to answer the driving question: is there a non-human animal in the image(s)? If yes, swipe right or click 'Yes'. If no, (i.e. you only see vegetation, cars, people or fire), swipe left or click 'No'. Don't worry about catching tiny insects or other incidental captures that don't trigger the camera on their own. We have other ways to sample for those types of wildlife that are more effective and accurate! If you think you see motion or a larger bird, mammal or reptile, please select yes.

Pro-tip: if there is an animal present in the first of the three images, you don't even need to look at the others! You can just swipe right or hit 'yes'.

That's all there is to it! Images marked by 3 unique classifiers as having animals in them will flow directly to the Biodiversity Detective workflow (the 'standard' one, where you are asked to provide species-level identifications). Images marked as not having animals in them will be retired for future analysis on other projects. Don't be surprised to see lots of pictures of vegetation relative to animals. We know from your work on the Biodiversity Detective workflow that upwards of 85% of our images are vegetation right now. You'll be zooming through images much more quickly on the mobile workflow, but your work there means animals up the wazoo on the regular workflow down the road!

We know that mobile workflows or this type of task isn't for everyone. You can always use the Biodiversity Detective workflow you are used to on your regular browser interface! We definitely could still use your help on the regular identification task. You can also try out the Animal or Not workflow from your computer - it's accessible on the eyesonwild.com homepage. If you get bored with one, switch to the other! It's all good with us, and it's all very helpful to our projects. We'll also be rolling out a few tweaks to the Biodiversity Detective workflow as Season 4 images roll in from the mobile interface. Keep an eye out for a pared-down species list, clearer information about which animals might have young with them, a refined definition of the insects we currently care about, and other minor changes recommended by you, the volunteers!

    1. Thanks, Audrey! It's a different sort of fun than the regular workflow, and it will make SUCH a difference in our efficiency moving forwards. Being able to quickly do an assessment of whether an image set has wildlife in it will help us to use our master IDers' time even more wisely moving forward!
